Dubai: Police aim to reduce road fatalities in Dubai to less than 100 this year from 134 in 2011, it was announced on Thursday.

The police drive is in line with the strategic plan to reach zero road deaths in 2020, Dubai Police Chief Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, said.

Speaking at the Scientific Research Day celebration held at police headquarters on Thursday, Lt Gen Dahi said traffic awareness campaigns are planned for 2012 in which experts, media persons and members of the society will take part using all channels of communication and every possible way to deliver the message.

Security status

He also pointed to the the UAE's high security status, which is third in the world, adding that the outstanding results achieved by the Criminal Investigation Department in implementing development plans led to a noticeable decrease in crime rate last year. During the ceremony, graduates of scientific research courses since 1996 were honoured.

Dr Mohammad Murad Abdullah, Director of the centre, said the care given to scientific research in the UAE was significant.
