Dubai: A British mum on a mission to curb child casualties in car smashes has repeated her pleas to buckle up after two children died in a horrific traffic accident this week.

Dubai-based Lesley Cull said: "I'm so sad to hear about yet another car accident resulting in the loss of lives. Such loss could have been averted by using a child car seat and seat belt.

"There is no money in the world to bring those lives back, but a few dirhams spent on a car seat would mean they would still be here. Please, buckle up."

Monday's crash in Abu Dhabi resulted in three siblings being flung out of their family car - only one survived. Their father was also killed.

Earlier this month a baby girl died after being thrown out of a car's front windshield in an accident in Umm Al Quwain - police said she was not strapped in. And last month an infant boy and his four-year-old sister died in a high-speed crash on the Dubai-Hatta road - their mother who was driving them is expected to face charges.

Cull, 40, wants to make seat belts in back seats a must. "It's not required by UAE law right now and I just question why that is the case. It may not be exciting or attractive to wear seat belts, but they can save your and your children's lives," she said.

The mother-of-two is the founder of the Buckle Up in the Back campaign. She has taken her safety drive to schools and early figures from surveys suggest almost every student in participating schools has started wearing a seat belt.

It’s commendable that someone at least is drawing attention to the dire need of educating children to use seatbelts in the UAE, although it might have been good if we could have had an official and a more robust seatbelt campaign using road signs rather than displaying meaningless slogans like ‘Beware of road surprises’.

I agree with this 100 per cent. It is shocking to see parents driving with kids jumping around inside the car. I have even seen people driving with their kids sitting on their knees!
