Dubai: The main reasons for traffic collisions in Dubai is bad driving behaviour and lack of manners, a senior official at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said.

"Drivers in Dubai have different driving habits as they come from different cultures ... which leads to chaos on roads," the official said, adding that the RTA is trying its best to train drivers to suit Dubai standards.

People from more than 170 nationalities hold driving licences in Dubai.

The official said that some people take pleasure in violating traffic rules, putting the lives of motorists in danger. "During the last couple of years, we have introduced new guidelines to unify driving lessons in the emirate.

"Having drivers coming from different countries with different driving cultures and habits, makes it a challenging job to make them follow a unified book," he noted.

A traffic expert at the RTA said most motorists in Dubai do not keep a safe distance between vehicles, drive aggressively, show no tolerance, and do not take into consideration other road users.

The guide, which was written based on analyses of a study on traffic and driving behaviour, has already been introduced in Dubai driving schools. It contains information in Arabic, English, and Urdu about driving techniques, training facilities, and roads network in the city.

The RTA has also recommended that the federal government unify the training and testing system for new drivers across the country.
