Traffic police have urged school bus drivers and supervisors to be more vigilant to ensure the safety of students and help in minimising accidents.

"Safe driving and care of students is the duty of drivers and supervisors and they must follow traffic rules and safety standards," said Captain Khamis Awad Al Ka'abi, head of information and public relations of the traffic police.
Alert
Speaking recently at a meeting of people involved in school transportation, he said Abu Dhabi Police had been extremely alert to the issue. The event was attended by more than 450 drivers, 180 supervisors, and others from Emirates Transport and schools.
Al Ka'abi said there were several incidents of people being run over that cost precious lives in the past.
"We do not want see such incident and want drivers, supervisors and schools administrations to be extremely alert for the pupils' safety," he added.
He also explained different traffic and safety rules and regulations and encouraged the audience to adhere to the speed limits on the roads. He also asked school administration to create awareness about traffic rules and safety among students.
Streamlining traffic
Meanwhile, traffic police has installed six new push-button signals at the city's school road (Sultan Bin Khalid Road) to provide safe road crossings for school children and other pedestrians.
Around 30 private schools are located on the same side of the road, where frequent traffic snarls are creating a major headache for parents, students, and traffic police during the peak traffic hours in the mornings and afternoons.
