Al Ain street signage enters new phase
Newly erected road signs to be linked to the Geographical Information System.
Al Ain: The city's civic administration has entered into the fourth phase of designing a new comprehensive routing and address system linked with the Geographical Information System (GIS) at the Town Planning Department.
The project, part of Al Ain Municipality's five year strategic plan, is the ongoing effort aimed at creating a robust and logical address system for the city, said a spokesperson of the Municipality.
Awad Khalifa Bin Hasoum Al Darmaki, General Manager of Al Ain Municipality, confirmed that he awarded a contract to National Company for the fourth phase of the route signing, street-naming and plot-numbering project.
"The phase will extend and strengthen the ongoing effort towards creating a robust and logical addressing system for the city which has been at the heart of creating an exemplary GIS at the Town Planning Department of the Municipality," said Al Darmaki.
The city, he said, is experiencing rapid urban development and the project will bring creative and advanced improvement to the design of road and street signs along with the use of high quality materials.
"The contract also includes a specialised system of signs for the Central Oasis - a historic jungle of Date Palm located at in the very heart of the downtown Al Ain."
Engineer Hessa Al Ma'armari, Acting Director of Al Ain Town Planning Department, said the new project phase will also extend road signing and plot numbering to the newly developed areas added to the city in the last two years.
"For the first time in the history of this project all newly erected signs will be recorded in the GIS database," she said. The new plot numbers will be entered in the database which has been in effect for several years.
Downtown area
She said that the project is also linked to the Traffic Movement Improvement (TMI) project that is currently under implementation in the downtown area of the city. "The TMI will significantly widen the pedestrian sidewalks, encouraging the practice of walking in the city centre area as an alternative to using private cars," said Al Ma'armari.
