Abu Dhabi police tell motorists to drive with caution
Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi police have urged motorists to drive with caution as bad weather is expected across the country.
"Pay attention while on the road and reduce speed as much as possible, especially amidst the changing weather conditions prevailing in the country during this time of the year. We are experiencing decline in visibility on the roads so it is essential to be extra cautious while driving," said Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Hadid Al Junaibi from the Al Ain Traffic Department.
Lt Col Al Junaibi said that motorists must expect less control of the vehicles as the roads are likely to become slippery.
"The fog condenses and forms a thin layer on the roads making them slippery. The weak friction between the road and the tyres could cause skidding."
He warned that lack of attention and not leaving ample space between vehicles could lead to fatal accidents.
If the conditions get really bad, motorists must pull over and wait for the weather to improve rather than continuing to drive, he said.
Also, drivers must remember to stop the vehicle safely away from the main road to avoid other accidents.
He advised travellers moving from one city to another to check weather updates and be prepared before embarking on their journey.
"Plan the right time to travel keeping in mind the visibility factor".
Al Junaibi appealed to motorists to slow down and commit to speed limits on the roads. Avoid swerving and changing lanes unnecessarily, he added.
He also warned motorists not to stop their vehicles under trees or near billboards and on construction sites.
Before starting a trip, ensure the vehicle is in good condition. Check the headlights, wipers, battery, tyres and the brakes
"Several motorists use hazard lights while travelling in fog. This is a dangerous practice as other drivers would not be able to make out if the vehicle is moving or not. If lights are switched on, it would reflect high fog and impede vision", he said, noting that the right method is to use fog lights if the car is equipped with them or to pull over and wait till visibility improves.
