Abu Dhabi: A total of 1,500 pedestrian violations have been reported by Abu Dhabi Police in 10 days.

As many as 250 jaywalkers were fined in two hours on the Zayed First Street and Shaikh Hamdan Street on Thursday, police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Dahi, Head of the Traffic Police Section at the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Department, said the traffic police have launched a campaign under the slogan 'Pedestrian safety is a collective responsibility' to spread awareness about proper road behaviour and the need to use places designated for pedestrians.

"Some people do not use pedestrian bridges and crossings, rather they choose to cross at random places. This is a dangerous practice and causes accidents," Lieutenant Colonel Dahi said, emphasising the need for pedestrians to follow traffic rules.

"Failing to adhere to pedestrian crossings is a traffic violation. Such pedestrians will be issued a fine of Dh200," he added.

He said police had to take firm measures because pedestrian-related crashes accounted for 20 per cent of all accidents recorded in the country last year.

These stringent measures aimed to reduce accidents resulting from wrong behaviours by pedestrians.

He urged jaywalkers to use pedestrian crossings and bridges so as not to endanger their lives and those of others. In Dubai, a crackdown on jaywalkers in Deira and Bur Dubai has drastically cut down accidents involving pedestrians.
