Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Police Traffic police have issued fines to more than 3,000 motorists for illegally modifying their vehicles either to increase speed or to give out a loud exhaust note.

During the first quarter of 2012, some 3,297 motorists across the emirate of Abu Dhabi were caught for violating the law by modifying engines to increase their vehicles' speed.

Additionally, 897 motorists were also pulled up for performing illegal modifications that resulted in a sharp increase in the noise emitted by their vehicles.

"Some rush to make illegal changes in their vehicles seeking attention and hoping to look cool. These modifications can cause serious traffic accidents in addition to noise and pollution," said Brigadier Hussain Al Harthi, director of the Traffic and Patrol directorate.

On June 10, the Traffic and Patrol directorate will launch a campaign to catch motorists who illegally modify their vehicles.

Violators will face a Dh900 fine in addition to their car being impounded for a month — Dh500 of the penalty is for driving a noisy vehicle and Dh400 for modifying it without permit.

Al Harthi called on parents to monitor their children and ensure that they were not making any illegal modifications to their vehicles.
