Dh195m project aims to streamline traffic flow
Abu Dhabi: The Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum Street (popularly known as Airport Road) upgrading project has reached a crucial stage with the construction of a 17-kilometre long fourth lane on both sides, Abu Dhabi Municipality said in a statement yesterday.
The Dh195 million upgrading project aiming to improve the traffic intake of the street to 9,200 vehicles per hour, is scheduled to be completed by December 2010.
The project also aims at streamlining traffic movement and alleviating traffic jams on this street and others leading to it.
The sector extending from the intersection of the road (intersection IP49) with Mohammad Bin Khalifa Street (Al Mushrif Signal) to the Old Airport Signal intersection — (Old Airport Park intersection IP 40) is being extended.
Scheduled for completion in December 2010, the project is part of the Municipality's strategy aimed at adding improvements and aesthetic elements to the city's streets to secure an advanced network of roads and transport.
The improvement works include among other things, 26 roadside parking slots for public buses, modernisation and addition of new lines of rainwater drainage network and erection of new lamp posts.
This project is part of the strategy of the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City to eliminate the traffic congestions on streets and roads by carrying out a wide network of roads, flyovers and tunnels in order to achieve the best level of efficiency.
