Abu Dhabi: From Sunday, the paid parking system in Abu Dhabi will be enforced round-the-clock, all year round, including Fridays and public holidays, a senior official said on Monday.Najib Al Zarouni, General Manager of Parking at the Department of Transport, said the move will help organise parking and prevent illegal parking.

"The move is also aimed at keeping roads and passageways clear for fire brigades, ambulances, police and municipality vehicles especially in an emergency. About 25 to 30 per cent of the underground parking facilities remain unutilised, especially at night," Al Zarouni explained.

Mawaqif [the parking system in Abu Dhabi] inspectors have started to create public awareness by distributing thousands of leaflets. It is to encourage motorists to refrain from parking illegally and to abide by the law in order to avoid being fined.

Al Zarouni said the Department of Transport is mandated to implement the parking law. "With this in mind, we urge the public to make proper use of the available spaces and underground parking facilities and not to park illegally, specifically in the spaces allocated for special needs or near fire hydrants."

Peak times

The pay-to-park system was rolled out in Abu Dhabi in October with fees levied for using 2,500 spaces located between Hamdan Street and Baniyas Street.

Within two years, paid parking will apply to around 75,000 parking spaces identified across 43 sectors of the city, including 5,000 spaces in underground car parks, Al Zarouni said.

However, studies show that during peak times there is a need for more than 100,000 spaces. Between 2005 and 2008, the number of registered vehicles in the emirate increased by an average of 16 per cent annually, and the number of people holding driving licences rose by 10 per cent annually.

Penalties: Fines and rates

Drivers who park outside the designated spaces — indicated by turquoise-and-white or blue-and-black kerb markings — will get fines ranging from Dh200 to Dh1,000.

At premium parking lots, which are on main streets, vehicles can be parked up to four hours at the rate of Dh3 per hour. In standard spaces, the rate is Dh2 per hour for a maximum of 24 hours.

People living in the paid parking areas can purchase permits, which allow unlimited parking in standard spaces only. Every resident may get two permits — the first costs Dh800 and the second will cost Dh1,200.

What do you think of this move? Will it help reduce the number of violations in Abu Dhabi?

Suppose I work in Hamdan St. where there is paid parking and live in TCA. I will need to park my car in Hamdan St.,, But I cannot get a parking card so I end up paying 16 Dhs per day to park my car? Why is that I cannot take a parking pass for the area I work?

Implementation of law for purpose of organizing traffic and parking is appreciable, but the convenience of public should be kept in mind. Some subsidies also be provided for residents of paid parking area. Even after getting Residential Permit, Parking in only standard spaces is not possible as spaces are less than cars owned in an area. What to do in this case?

I appriciate the police to enforce the fine to the wrong parking and, I think from my point of view if you can provide more of the police inespectors even at night that could prevent the wrong parking and would do their objectives.

It is a good news for residents. Otherwise there will be illegal parking during free hours, causing inconvenience to properly parked vehicles. I could not take out my car from parking last Friday due to other vehicles parked at the centre of the road. In all ways 24 hr is welcome. With the introduction of paid parking so many abandoned cars also got identified. Also residents get a chance to park vehicles close to their building. Hope the system will eliminate parking problems.

They should follow the Dubai RTA procedure in paying toll fees during weeks end no fee especially friday, and during holidays. 1 AED is enough for one hour for business areas 2 AED for hour, that's it.

It is difficult to digest parking fees for 24 hrs, 365 days.it will be good to implement the fee like Dubai from 8.00am to 9.00 pm and friday and public holidays

I welcome the move to control parking but please let the DoT provide suitable alternatives for motorists because the current bus operations are inadequate for Abu Dhabi. The buses cover less than 10% of Abu Dhabi at the moment. I do not feel there is currently a suitable alternative to justisy widening the coverage for parking restrictions.

The Basic purpose of paid parking system is to control illegal parkings and motivate people to make proper use of parking spaces. But Mawaqif seems to be deviated from its principle. Neither there is provision for people having residence and office both in paid parkig areas nor it has any options for people who cannot get tenancy agreement from their landlords for any reason. And in addtion there are less parking spaces even in current paid parking areas so residents too have to go round n round to search a parking space. Can any one raise the question?
