120,000 cars have lapsed registrations
More than 120,000 vehicles on Dubai roads are being driven with expired registrations, the bulk of which are rental cars, said a senior police official on Monday.
Dubai: More than 120,000 vehicles on Dubai roads are being driven with expired registrations, the bulk of which are rental cars, said a senior police official on Monday.
Lieutenant Colonel Saif Al Mazroui, Deputy Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said 70 per cent of cars with out of date registrations belonged to car rental agencies.
He said the fines for not renewing registrations of vehicles that belong to car rental agencies accumulated to more than Dh11 million in just four months.
The number of vehicles registered in Dubai reached 853,827 in 2007 compared to 739,547 vehicles in 2006.
Highlight issues
Lieutenant Colonel Al Mazroui yesterday held a meeting with owners and representatives from a number of car rental agencies in Dubai. It aimed to highlight various issues that car rental agencies face and coordinate with them regarding rental, registration and traffic issues.
Lieutenant Colonel Al Mazroui also discussed with the owners and representatives of car rental agencies the importance of taking credit cards as a guarantee and not passports.
"If car rental agencies have vehicles with expired registrations for more than six months, the traffic department will confiscate the vehicles until the agencies rectify their situations," he said.
Lieutenant Colonel Al Mazroui said according to the new system, the traffic department will ease transactions for car rental agencies on the condition of having a clean traffic file.
"The transactions of every vehicle that belongs to car rental agencies will be treated on an individual basis. However, the traffic file must be clean. For instance, the car agency should not have unregistered vehicles for many years and then ask for leniency," he said
He said the traffic department would hold meetings with owners and representatives of car rental agencies to clarify any issues.
According to statistics, Dubai Police's Traffic Department reported 194,438 traffic offences last month.
