Dubai: Malls and souqs across Dubai officially kicked off Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) 2013 late Friday evening to mark the opening of the three-part Summer in Dubai festival, drawing in thousands of shoppers.
Summer in Dubai, which also includes Ramadan and Eid promotions, offers prizes worth Dh5 million as well as eight BMW cars across dozens of participating malls in the city.
Organised by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), DSS is the annual shopping and entertainment extravaganza that attracts visitors from around the world and particularly from neighbouring GCC countries who throng Dubai to take advantage of the promotions.
“I’m looking forward to doing some serious shopping for myself and my family. We often come to Dubai during summer as this is the time when schools are closed and we can have a family holiday. My children love to come to Dubai,” Ahmad Fattah, an Omani father of two who arrived in Dubai on Thursday, told Gulf News.
Apart from bargain and bumper prizes, the campaign promises a series of events including the June 20 re-opening of the Modhesh World, the largest edutainment indoor theme park in the region, Kids Fashion Week, mall shows, theatrical presentations, concerts, children activities and more.
“I just love the atmosphere in the malls during DSS, it’s electric with so much happening around and so many things to look forward to. I am planning to pick and choose and there are plenty of offers,” said Maria D’Mello, a Filipina shopper, Friday night.
Organisers said the 16th DSS is offering unmatched promotions, prizes and entertainment, as the event rolls out a three-month itinerary with shows like Xtreme Festival at Mall of the Emirates.
Shoppers, spending a minimum of Dh200 in participating malls will be entitled to a coupon for the “Summer is Dubai” mega promotion, with a chance to win eight BMW cars.
The raffle promotion is phased across DSS (June 7 to July 7), Eid August 1-14) and End of Season (August 15 -September 7). DSS promotion will also offer 17 winners the chance to win prizes worth Dh1 million in cash apart from shopping vouchers.
Some of the interesting events that took place on Friday include the Jungle Circus, Elvis Forever, Dancing Toys, Modhesh Meet and Greet etc.
