Dubai: The seventh Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport (DAST) is likely to see tough competition with 120 nominees vying for top honours.

The winners across six main categories and four subsidiary categories will be awarded at a ceremony on Wednesday at Dubai World Trade Centre.

Held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the award is aimed at raising public awareness and encouraging community organisations to play an active role in boosting sustainable transport.

It also highlights the leading role of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in bolstering partnership and cooperation between various entities and placing sustainable transport as a high priority for all.

Ray LaHood, former Secretary of the US Department of Transportation, will be the guest of honour and key speaker at the opening ceremony.

DAST has seen significant growth in participation and its impact on society since its inception in 2008.

“The number of the main categories of the award has increased from three in the inaugural edition to six categories, in addition to four subsidiary categories in this seventh edition,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of RTA.

A new main category for Smart Apps has been added to reward initiatives and practices introducing smart apps for sustainable transport.

Two new sub-categories have also been introduced — Sustainable Transport projects from university and school students and Most Frequent Users of Public Transport in Dubai emirate spanning all modes of public transport.
