Sharjah: Police on Tuesday said they had arrested a female Emirati motorist suspected of being responsible for a hit-and-run accident in Kalba City, which left an Emirati boy injured.

The nine-year-old victim, identified as A.A.A, was seriously injured when a car ran over him while he was crossing at an undesignated point along Al Wahda Street on Sunday afternoon.

He was transferred to Kalba hospital for treatment.

Police Anjad and paramedics moved to the scene of the incident after the police operation room received a report around 4.20pm. Eyewitnesses told police that a female driver had caused the accident and drove away.

Police launched a hunt for the missing motorist.

They were able to identify the vehicle from data gathered at the accident scene and arrested a suspect.

Officers said their investigations revealed that the sister of the car’s owner, identified as M.A.J, was driving the car at the time of the accident without her brother’s knowledge.

She is said to have confessed that she ran over the boy and fled the scene because she did not have a driver’s licence.

The car’s owner was summoned by Kalba police station for interrogation.

The man denied being involved in the incident .

Sharjah Police have called on parents to monitor their children and not to leave them playing on the streets as they may be involved in traffic accidents, which lead to death in some cases.

Police also appealed to road users to cross the road at designated pedestrian crossing places.
