Dubai: More than 12,000 pedestrians who crossed the road recklessly were fined by Dubai Police's traffic department in the first half of this year.

Major Omar Mousa Ashour, director of the traffic accidents department, said in a press statement that Bur Dubai Police station had issued 6,805 tickets, while Deira Police Station had issued 6,134 tickets in the first half of this year. Most of those fined were labourers.

He added that it was forbidden to cross a street that has a speed limit of 80km/h and above. Major Ashour said increasing the fine for jaywalking from Dh50 to Dh200 had contributed significantly in cutting the number of accidents and fatalities among pedestrians.
