Sharjah: Reckless motorists who were caught on radar driving at speeds of up to 200km/h or more have been summoned by Sharjah Police to face legal action, traffic police said on Tuesday. Previously violators paid their fines when renewing their vehicle registration.

Police said they had deployed more radars to slam the brakes on speeding motorists. The move was taken after a campaign which kicked off on May 4 to curb the number of deaths on the road.

Colonel Shawaf Mohammad Abdul Rahman, Director-General of Sharjah Police’s Traffic and Patrols Department, said police found around 40 per cent of violators had been driving at speeds of more than 200km/h.

He said that Sharjah Police had put a numbers of steps in place to protect lives, which included cracking down on errant drivers, especially those who commit serious offences. Highways will be intensively patrolled.

“Drivers caught speeding at over 200 kilometres per hour will have their vehicles confiscated for 30 days, 12 black points on their driver’s licence and a fine of Dh1,000. The law will not be lenient with these reckless drivers,” he said.

Motorists will not be able to pay in order to stop their cars from being seized, he said.

“Tough action is required to prevent the deaths of innocent people on our roads,” he added.
