Sharjah: Sharjah Police, in collaboration with the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, launched on Sunday an awareness campaign on special needs parking zones.

The campaign titled “Do not take my right” aims at promoting respect for parking zones allocated for the disabled.

The fine for parking cars in special needs zones is Dh1,000 and the person will be issued four black points.

Sharjah Police have fined 1,439 people this year for parking their vehicles in slots allocated for people with special needs.

The police said people “intentionally violated the rights of people with special needs” by parking their cars in these areas, especially at night.

Colonel Shawaf Mohammad Abdul Rahman, Director-General of Sharjah Police’s Traffic and Patrols Department, said parking vehicles in special needs zones “is a violation of the rights of people with special needs”.

He said violations increased at night after 10pm “as some think that there is no monitoring at night”.

“They park their cars at night, thinking they will move them early in the morning. They are mistaken because the police patrol round the clock to check on violations so as to prevent any kind of act that endangers people’s lives,” he said.

The campaign includes educating the public about the importance of respecting the right of disabled people.

Brochures in both Arabic and English will be distributed on roads and in shopping malls and information will also be posted online.

He urged the public to inform the Sharjah Police in case they spot violations.
