Dubai: Commuters who used the Dubai Metro on Saturday evening had to walk up and down Metro station escalators after a 10-minute power failure caused both the Red and Green Lines to stop functioning.
“We were coming from the Business Bay station when the lift and the escalators suddenly stopped working. When we reached the Burjuman station, there was no power on the lifts as well,” Irish, a regular commuter told Gulf News. “In my case I am not affected. But it’s a pity to see the elderly and children who had to go up and down the stairs.”
Jean, another commuter, said: “A power disruption for one day is fine. But if it happens every day, then it’s a cause for alarm.”
Mohammad Al Mudharreb, Director of Rail Operations Department at the Roads and Transport Authority, told Gulf News: “The Dubai Metro experienced a power spike at 5.54pm but power was resumed within a minute. It didn’t affect the operations of the Metro but it affected the power supply to the facilities inside the station.”
Al Mudharreb said power had to be reset, causing some stations to lose power for 10 minutes. A situation was reported in Al Ras Metro Station where commuters were caught inside the lift which stopped mid-air. Al Mudharreb said the trapped passengers were rescued immediately.
