Sharjah: A possible tragedy was averted on Thursday morning when Sharjah Police intervened in the case of a lost seven-year-old Arab pupil who had missed his school bus and was attempting to make the trek to school on foot.

A quick response by police saved the child from potential danger after he was spotted by police surveillance cameras walking alone on Al Wahda road in the middle of a heavy traffic jam.

The incident was reported to the police operations room by a concerned motorist stuck in the fray who reported that a child was walking alone on the bridge and carrying his school bag on his way towards the intersection at Shaikh Humaid Bin Saqr.

Police officers reached the child and quickly put him in the cruiser away from oncoming traffic.

They immediately moved to determine the whereabouts of his parents.

The child believed that he would be able to reach his school from the road, which his bus used every day.

Police took the child to his school and then set about looking into the reasons behind the child missing his morning bus.

Major General Humaid Mohammad Al Hadidi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, followed up the case personally from the police operations room.

He warned all those involved in the safety of pupils being transport to and from school to be extremely vigilant to avoid placing any pupils in harm’s way.

He stressed that parents should ensure their children have boarded and exited their school bus safely.

Supervisors, he said, who are involved in the transport of students also need to be aware of any problems that young pupils can face going to and coming from school.

Pointing out the need for communication between families and the school, he praised the efforts made by police to remove the child from danger and secure his arrival at school.
