Sharjah: An accident involving a single vehicle on Al Ittihad Road shortly before midnight on Saturday resulted in the death of a man, police said.

The driver could not escape the burning vehicle and died in the accident, which the police are attributing to overspeeding. Police have identified the victim as S.M.A., a 26-year-old man from Oman.

The vehicle is likely to be written off after it was gutted by intense flames which drew bystanders to the area during the incident.

Police estimated the time of the accident at around 11.50pm and said the vehicle burned for some time until police patrols, paramedics and Civil Defence teams arrived on the scene.

Preliminary investigation suggested that the driver was overspeeding when he lost control of the vehicle and smashed it into a concrete barrier on the right side of the road.

Police did not say whether the collision damaged the vehicle to the extent that it prevented the driver from exiting the car.

The body of the victim was moved to Khalifa Hospital in Ajman. It was later moved to a forensic laboratory.

Investigation continues.
