Sharjah: Jaywalkers and reckless drivers were targeted by Sharjah Police recently in a safety campaign aimed at slashing needless deaths and injuries recorded at road crossings across the emirate every year.

The new campaign was rolled out under the theme, “Pedestrian safety is our responsibility” and ran from May 7 to 14.

A Sharjah Police official said the campaign was part of the Ministry of Interior’s strategic plan which is working to boost safety.

The new campaign aimed to stem the number of accidents involving pedestrians.

Police said the campaign was designed to educate the public through information guides offering advice on crossing roads safely and safe driving tips. There were also hefty fines for offenders who breached road safety laws.

Tips were introduced to the public via brochures and booklets in Arabic and English.
