Dubai: More than 500 residents of The Greens have signed a petition about consistent traffic jams in the development.

The petition states: "We the undersigned respectfully request that Emaar Properties and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai ensure that fair and adequate provision is made for the residents of the Greens to access and egress from the surrounding road network - specifically exits to the Shaikh Zayed Road, the Al Sufouh Bridge and relief of chronic congestion on the Road 316."

Residents are blaming the traffic congestion on heavy vehicles and other motorists who drive through the community to avoid paying a Salik charge at the Al Barsha gate.

Charm lost

"Emaar shares the concern of residents about the traffic congestion during rush hours at some entry and exit points at The Greens, however this is due to ongoing road improvement works in the area by the authorities," an Emaar spokesperson said. "To assist in the resolution of this matter, Emaar is currently working closely with The Greens homeowner representative committee and RTA to address the concerns."

S.J. has been living in the community since 2004. "I must say that over the years the community has lost some it its idyllic charm mainly due to the traffic situation. A once simple entry exit option has today become a nightmare of over an hour just to get from street 5 to the main road ... a distance of less than a kilometre.

"Not only are we looking at Salik dodgers, but our once peaceful internal community roads have actually become bustling highways for trucks, lorries, tankers and a whole wad of commercial vehicles. I am already typing out a letter to Emaar stating that I will not pay my community maintenance fee for the next year if they do not resolve the traffic issues surrounding the Greens," he said.

Another resident suggested stopping traffic from The Greens streets 2-6 from turning left to access Shaikh Zayed Road would provide relief, while blocking cars from making U-turns on Street 2 may also assist the situation.
