Woman gets Dh250,000 for botched hip surgeries
A court has awarded a young mother Dh250,000 in compensation for four botched operations at a Dubai hospital on her dislocated hip.
Dubai: A court has awarded a young mother Dh250,000 in compensation for four botched operations at a Dubai hospital on her dislocated hip.
The Dubai Civil Court of Appeal granted the Egyptian mother a quarter of a million dirhams after she sued the hospital for malpractice and negligence and claimed Dh500,000 in compensation.
The woman had dislocated her left hip. She went for treatment at the hospital. Her left hip was dislocated two months after the first operation. She reported back to the same hospital where she was anaesthetised and had the dislocation fixed a second time. The third dislocation happened five weeks later and she underwent a similar therapy. Also six weeks later she suffered the fourth dislocation.
The claimant said in her civil lawsuit: "After suffering severe pain and worry, she consulted several other doctors who advised her to undergo reconstructive surgery on her left hip. She underwent surgery to her right hip at a new hospital but she was afraid to have her left hip treated as she had lost trust in most doctors. The defendant refused to offer her any settlement."
She lodged a complaint before the Dubai Department of Health and Medical Services (Dohms) where a medical committee confirmed the malpractice and mismanagement committed by the hospital.
The Dohms committee informed her about the technical malpractice which the surgeon committed during the operation.
The two parties have appealed to the Court of Cassation which will issue its verdict soon.
