Dubai: A senior dermatologist has called for the beauty business in the UAE to be regulated, saying aestheticians are performing certain procedures they are not qualified to do.

"The regulations need to be stricter," said Dr. Hassan Galadari. "People come from abroad and perform the procedures out of their homes."

Dr. Galadari was speaking to Gulf News at the launch of Dubai Derma conference at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre yesterday. More than 5,000 top dermatologists and physicians are taking part in the conference.

It may be recalled that an American doctor recently lost his licence after performing botched liposuction procedures that left some of his patients disfigured.

Dr Galadari said most beauty clinics these days adopt minimally invasive techniques that save people both time and cost. "The recovery time is within minutes and you can get a procedure done during your lunch break and get back to work. Most everyone can afford it," he said, remarking that it was unfortunate that physical attributes of personality often led to other important aspects being overlooked.

Earlier, giving a talk on the Art and Science of Beauty, he said outer beauty consists of youthfulness, symmetry, health and complexion, but that these change with time. "Inner beauty is your personality, intelligence, charisma, grace and politeness."

The Derma exhibition which runs until April 28 is showcasing the latest technology geared to the business of beauty.

Inaugurating the conference, Qadi Saeed Al Murooshid, director general of Dubai Health Authority, said it was imperative to hold such events in view of the continous development in the field of dermatology.
