Ajman: A number of students got food poisoning after eating at the cafeteria that operates at Ajman University of Science and Technology, students told Gulf News.

The students said they usually get hot meals from Alberto Bella cafeteria at the university, but they never knew it served unhygienic food.

"On Sunday, we had our lunch at the university's cafeteria and after some time I [had a] stomachache and started vomiting," one of the victims of food poisoning said. "It was the only meal we had that day," said another student.

The students were admitted to hospital for treatment. A source from the Ajman Municipality and Planning Department said there were several complaints about that cafeteria. "We have received complaints regarding the [food] poisoning cases among students at that cafeteria," said the official

"We are investigating the case," he said. He said this is not the first time that complaints were reported to the municipality regarding the hygiene at the cafeteria.

The official said that luckily the food-poisoning cases were moderate and no students had to stay in hospital for a long time.

One of the victims is a police official who is doing a masters degree in law at the university. Gulf News contacted the workers at the cafeteria who said the municipal inspectors contacted them to follow up the issue.

"We do not have more details about the students who got [food] poisoning here," a staff at the cafeteria said.
