Dubai: A state-of-the-art burns unit was officially opened at Dubai's Rashid Hospital on Monday.

The new facility, which has eight isolation rooms and a three-bed ICU section, was inaugurated by Qadi Saeed Al Murooshid, the Director General of Dubai Health Authority (DHA).

Several other new units were also announced as part of the DHA's strategy to renovate the 600-bed hospital, which was built in 1973. Ten central cardiac monitoring rooms, two sleep labs and a neurosurgical ICU section all opened simultaneously yesterday morning.

Al Murooshid said: "Over the years, the number of patients visiting Rashid Hospital has drastically increased and we are keeping pace with this development to ensure we cater to the health care needs of our population, now and in the future.

Renovation

"We have undertaken this renovation and expansion project because Rashid Hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in Dubai and also receives cases from the northern emirates."

The renovation of Rashid Hospital is one of the biggest projects currently being undertaken by the DHA. The cost of each bed within the burns unit's ICU section was Dh130,000.

Dr Shawqi Khoury, Director of Rashid Hospital, said: "Each new section has been built after analysing the requirements the hospital needs to fulfil and keeping in mind the health care needs of our patients. The new units are equipped with modern technology and are certainly at par with global health care standards."

The sleep lab features two new chambers. The first is to monitor cases of epilepsy, convulsions and the movement of eyes during sleep whereas the other chamber will primarily monitor respiratory and breathing disorders during sleep.

Al Murooshid added: "The chambers have sound isolation and are fitted with the latest technology to monitor sleep. Very few health care facilities in Dubai have this facility."
