Dubai: If you’ve been quoted a low price for your home on the pretext that it’s located near high tension cables, you may want to take a cue from Indian expat Sheetal.

She used a simple device to call the bluff of real estate agents who had underestimated the value of her three bedroom villa in Jumeirah Park over health concerns.

Sheetal bought an electromagnetic field (EMF) meter to gauge the radiation level in her house. The test results showed her villa was within the 0.1 micro teslas range, considered a safe distance from the cables.

“I was concerned about the radiation level in my house as I have two small daughters. So I bought an EMF meter and decided to check the levels myself.

I am relieved we are not in any danger. I just wish real estate agents too would do their research before quoting lower prices on these villas. The villa next to mine has been vacant over radiation fears. Radiation in villas near power cables is a myth in Dubai,” she said. The asking rent for villas close to cables is five per cent less than others, while their selling price is also 7.5 per cent lower than similar sized properties elsewhere.
