'My beautiful daughter looks like a ghost now'

Sharjah: Reem, a 30-year-old doctor who fell into a coma after giving birth to twins more than two years ago, now 'looks like a ghost', her distressed mother said.
"She was beautiful and smart looking and now she is suffering from infections in various parts of her body," said Zakia Khalid, the woman's mother.
Reem fell into a coma at Al Qasimi Hospital in 2006 and her parents believe it was due to negligence by the staff. Hospital officials were unavailable for comment.
Reem's mother said her daughter had gone for a pre-natal check-up and a doctor ordered an immediate Caesarean section. She gave birth to Gassan and Bisan and went into a coma due to complications.
She said the twins were growing up. "I take them to see their mother but they do not know her and they have never felt her love and tenderness. My daughter cannot see or hold her children," she said.
Health deteriorating
"I pray hard that she will get better. We are all in pain and suffering because of what has happened to my precious daughter," Zakia said.
Doctors have told the parents that their daughter's condition will never improve. "I know she is in pain and her health is deteriorating day after day," she said.
The hospital is asking them to take their daughter out as it needs the bed.
"My daughter needs a nurse to be with her 24 hours a day. She cannot be left alone at night. I am afraid her health could get worse while she is sleeping and she cannot ask for help."
A Ministry of Health official said that what happened to Reem was her fate and that the hospital is offering her a room and providing healthcare. The Ministry earlier sent Reem abroad for treatment but her health did not improve.
Her mother alleges that a delay in treatment and lack of proper equipment at Al Qasimi Hospital caused Reem's condition. Khalid said Reem's husband had filed a case against the Ministry of Health.
