Abu Dhabi: Nearly three tonnes of beauty and consumer products that did not meet public health and safety standards were recently confiscated and destroyed, the Abu Dhabi Municipality said.

The items were seized during random checks on beauty parlours, salons and outlets selling consumer goods. The expiry date had lapsed on many of the products.

Other violations included illegible labels, lack of English and Arabic labels and countries of origin on products, improper storage methods, inaccurate medical claims on cosmetic substances, sale of pharmaceutical items in unlicensed stores and the sale of harmful aphrodisiacs, Khalifa Al Rumaithi, director of public health at the municipality, said.

Municipal officials will continue to perform checks on outlets.

Al Rumaithi urged residents to check on the licensing and safety certifications of products they wish to purchase.
