Abu Dhabi: A plan is under way to register unskilled workers and issue them with national identity cards when they go for their medical tests.

The issue was discussed in a meeting between Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) officials and various ministry and government departments. The most effective way of rolling out the UAE national ID card project was considered.

Dr Saeed Khalfan Al Daheri, Director-General of the EIDA, met Ahmad Kajour, Assistant Undersecretary for Planning at the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Dr Ali Al Mazrouie, Director of Preventive Medicine Department at Abu Dhabi General Authority of Health Services, Dr Zainab Khazaal from the Ministry of Health and Dr Adnan Julfar from Health and Medical Services Department in Dubai.

"The meeting we had was part of EIDA's strategy aimed at being in constant communication with different departments and authorities in the country. This move will further enhance coordination and allow us to exchange experiences.

"A proposal to register unskilled workers and issue them with ID cards as they appear for their medical tests in the country is currently being processed," said Dr Al Daheri.

The process would simplify data entry as well as help save time in the registration process, he said. The labour ministry revealed about 500,000 unskilled workers were registered at the Ministry.

Dr Daheri said another proposal to unify the payment of all government fees at one place, such as for health certificates, visas, ID cards and others, was being processed. It is set to be implemented by the end of this year.
