DUBAI : He has tears in the eyes, mucus in the nose and his mouth is foaming. You can hear him as he throws up, even as his lips and nails turn blue. His pulse drops as does his systolic blood pressure…

As he staggers between life and death, it's hard to tell Smart Stat is a manikin. As real as it can get, it's an innovation even by existing patient simulator standards.

A creation of Simulaids, a patient simulator manufacturer, it was introduced at the Arab Health Congress for patient simulation training exercises for practitioners of basic and advanced life support, nursing and physician evaluation.

Kirk Rossi of Nasco, which represents Simulaids abroad, said the wireless trainer comes with a laptop and operates with Pocket PC Bluetooth technology. It entails a central nervous system head with enzyme-inhibitor signs allowing for toxic manifestations. It has a cardio pulmonary resuscitation recording feature with carotid pulses, an ECG artefact, bilateral B/P and IV arms and urinary catheterisation with a genital area. The IV blood and urine output are stored on board.

The manikin has spontaneous respiration, 12 active pulse points, oral and nasal intubation, break-out teeth, moveable eyelids and silicone head skin that allows the mouth to open naturally.
