Ajman: A 45-year-old man was rescued from under a pile of rubble after a roof collapsed in the auto upholstery shop where he was working in Ajman, said an official at Ajman Civil Defence.

Lieutenant Ali Al Marzouqi, acting director of Customer Service Centre at Ajman Civil Defence, said that the operation room received a call around 11:51pm that the Al Fahlel Cars Upholstery and Accessories roof had apparently caved in and that a worker was trapped inside at the Al Naiumayah commercial area.

Police cordoned off the area and visitors at the scene could see through the front store windows that debris had fallen everywhere in the premises.

Firefighters and paramedics rushed immediately to the scene where witnesses said there was a Bangladeshi man trapped in the shop.

The man was rescued in 10 minutes and taken to Khalifa hospital.

An official at Khalifa hospital told Gulf News that the man sustained minor injuries and his condition is improving.

Police are investigating the cause of the incident.

Investigators have not elaborated at press time on whether the structural supports for the roof of the building failed or whether there was another cause for the failure of the top shell of the commercial structure.
