Abu Dhabi: A recalled baby food from Heinz, the US-based food company, is not sold in the local market, two major retailers told Gulf News yesterday.

Meanwhile Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) said they are checking whether the recalled product is available on the shelves of retailers according to a spokesman.

Heinz has recalled thousands of pots of baby food due to the possibility that they could contain small pieces of plastic.

The company issued an alert after four parents contacted the company and informed that they had found plastic in the pots.

The UK's Daily Mail reports that a batch of its Fruity Custard Fruit Medley baby food has been identified as a choking hazard to babies.

A spokesman of Emke Group which operates Lulu, the largest retail chain in the region, said: "We have not been selling that particular product, and other Heinz products available with us are Australian made [the recalled products are the US or UK made]," he said.

Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society (ADCOPS) also said they have not been selling this product for a while.

"The supplier has stopped importing this product from the UK due to some local restrictions on packaging," said Bejoy Thomas, Manager, Marketing and New Initiatives at ADCOPS.
