Fujairah: Fujairah Municipality on Wednesday signed an agreement with a private company for the safe disposal of medical waste generated by private medical institutes in the emirate.

The deal with Al Zarouni Company came in the wake of a new law issued two weeks ago by Shaikh Hamad Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Fujairah.

The Law No. 1. (2008) empowers the Municipality to enforce the safe treatment and disposal of all medical waste in accordance with international standards.

The law prohibits the unsafe disposal of medical waste in the municipality's trash containers and it also outlaws dealing with waste disposal companies unlicensed by the relevant authorities in the emirate.

All medical institutions are required to keep records of their medical waste along with methods of its disposal.

The Dh20 million deal signed on Wednesday will facilitate the building of an incinerator in a remote location near Masafi, which will be able to dispose of the 20 tonnes of medical waste produced by private medical institutes in Fujairah on a monthly basis.

Fujairah's government medical institutes already operate with similar waste disposal companies, municipality officials said.

Al Zarouni Company will provide specially designed containers for medical waste which will be transported using trucks specially designated for the task.

Work on the new incinerator is due to start soon, officials say.
