Food poisoning scare at mall
civic body investigates six visitors' claim to have fallen ill after eating at outlet
Dubai: Six people have fallen ill after eating buffet food at the India Palace restaurant in Ibn Battuta Mall at the weekend, they claim.
One diner suffered from severe vomiting and diarrhoea and collapsed from the symptoms. Others suffered from stomach pains and diarrhoea.
Dubai housewife N.P. said: "The first thing we noticed is that the plates in the restaurant were dirty. There was a buffet with four or five dishes - I had a chicken and rice dish. After just 10 minutes a couple of my friends said they were feeling ill and my husband also.
Fainted
"At 5am I awoke with bad stomach pains and vomited. After this I fainted and I was even sick after drinking water.
"I was ill for 15 hours - usually we eat with children, what if they had been there? Adults can cope much better with these symptoms."
N.P. took a course of medicine from a chemist and she was still feeling the effects of the illness three days after the meal.
Abin Sreejith, Manager, India Palace restaurant, countered the complaint saying: "Hygiene is pretty good at the restaurant. I'm sure this hasn't happened because everything is clean and tidy. We haven't had any other reports, so you can't tell if they were ill from here."
Under investigation
The case has been reported to Dubai Municipality and is under investigation.
Complaints against restaurants yesterday were not confined to malls. Media worker Hamish Jones claims to have contracted food poisoning from a restaurant in Deira.
"I had stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea after eating seafood in a restaurant.
"It was so bad I had to have morphine and went to the hospital twice. I had to have four days off work and I was either in bad pain or sedated."
