Dubai : A Dubai-based private clinic is offering facial treatments using human placenta.

The Biolite Skin Clinic, set up by medical aesthetician Mona Mirza at the Dubai Healthcare City, said it offers two types of facials - regular and diamond.

Regular facials at the clinic cost Dh1,500, while diamond facials are Dh2,000 for 60 minutes.

Popularised in the West by celebrities such as Madonna and Jennifer Lopez, the controversial facial works on the principle that placenta (which supplies the fetus with oxygen and food), is made of proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes, and substitutes old skin components with young cells.

Youthful skin

"Once the placenta protein is absorbed into the skin cells, the cells are triggered to mimic the newer collagen resulting in long-term benefits and youthful skin," a statement from the clinic said.

While an immediate comment was not available from Mirza on where the placenta is being sourced or ethical issues about its use, international media reports said that the serum used in her facials is made by an American manufacturer.

"The treatment claims the afterbirth is farmed from Russian babies and is donated voluntarily," a report in the Times of India said.
