Dubai Rashid Hospital Trauma Centre receives 10,000 cases in 6 months

Dubai: Rashid Hospital Trauma Centre will mark a dubious milestone in the next few days. It has received nearly 10,000 major cases so far this year, almost 1 per cent of the population of Dubai.
To date, the centre has received 9,573 major cases from paramedics, or about 50 cases daily. The figure does not include walk-ins, which would put the total count over 10,000.
Most of the cases received are from road and traffic accidents, assaults and medical problems, such as heart attacks.
Doctors at Trauma Centre, when confronted with the figures, told Gulf News they were not surprised.
"It's too much. Today is Friday. People should be sleeping but they drink too much, they drive too fast and they fight," said one doctor, who asked not to be identified.
Police officers at the centre took the same view.
"We can get up to 100 cases of assaults and [road and traffic accidents] in a day. Today, we already have 39 cases on file" by 2pm, said a police officer, showing the casebook.
The Trauma Centre, with its 600 beds, is already operating at over-capacity, having to turn away some patients and sending them to other hospitals, including Dubai Hospital and Al Baraha Hospital.
"It's really getting to be a problem. And we're the ones who have to deal with patients when the centre turns them away," commented one paramedic.
