Dubai: Details of Dubai's plan to encourage people to stop smoking are to be released Monday. The ‘Dubai Declaration' will explain the steps that the Dubai government plans to take in the fight against tobacco.

The announcement will be part of the ‘Anti-World Tobacco Day' activities which take place at Dubai Women's Association in the presence of Dr Hanif Hassan, UAE Minister of Health.

Dr Hussain Abdul Razaq Al Jazaeri, Director of WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region will announce the launch of the Anti-tobacco campaign in the UAE region.

Campaign

This year's campaign will target women and children in conjunction with the World Health Organisation (WHO) who are running a campaign called ‘Girls and Boys against Smoking'.

The focus will be on educating women about the dangers of smoking and raising the issue of women's use of tobacco around the world.

Studies

Studies show that women represent about 20 per cent of smokers, out of more than a billion smokers worldwide; the number continues to increase.

It's noted that the rate of consumption of other tobacco products, such as shisha and inhaled and chewed tobacco, is also increasing amongst women around the world, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

The WHO framework convention aims to educate women around the world on the wide number of health-related problems caused by smoking in the hope they will quit.
