Dubai: Medical specialists highlighted the adverse effects of smoking on the skin, heart, gastrointestinal tract and bones during an anti-smoking campaign at the American College of Dubai.
Aimed at teenagers and young adults, the campaign tackled the issue of peer pressure and the trend of younger smokers. Specialists educated students on how smoking is a cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The specialists were volunteers of the Dubai Chapter of Association of Kerala Medical Graduates (AKMG), a non-profit organisation. A study from Rashid Hospital, Dubai, estimates that the prevalence of smokers in the UAE is around 23-24 per cent — with almost half smoking cigarettes, and the remainder shisha and midwakh.
