Dubai: The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) is checking the qualifications of physicians in both the private and public sector during its re-licensing process of doctors, the authority announced yesterday.

The process will check the authenticity of the credentials of more than 3,000 physicians across the emirate.

A senior official in the authority said the primary source verification (PSV) for physicians is under way. "Although it is a lengthy process it is very important because it will help improve the quality of health care in the Emirate of Dubai," said Dr Ramadan Ebrahim, acting Director of DHA Health Regulation Department

In another development, the department has begun its consultation programme that will be held at 18 hospitals in Dubai.

The programme is aimed at providing the private medical sector a direct channel of communication and consultations take place every Tuesday.

The DHA health regulation team visits two to three hospitals each week. So far, the team has visited Canadian Hospital and Welcare Hospital.

"The selection of hospitals is based on the bed size and the location. This is part of the DHA's strategy to build a more transparent health care system," said the acting director.

"This is to ensure quality of health care in Dubai is maintained and further improved. For us to effectively fulfil our role it is imperative that we to understand the needs and concerns of the medical community," Ebrahim said in a statement.
