Abu Dhabi: Under the global theme 1,000 Cities, 1,000 Lives, and the sponsorship of Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS)-SEHA, School Health Services (SHS), in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) will be conducting a diabetes awareness campaign across 17 schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region.

SHS is responsible for the management of health services within all governmental schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It is a subsidiary of Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS).

The campaign started in Abu Dhabi and Western Region, and runs from April 4 to 12, and in Al Ain from April 6 to 8. The activity aims to bring about awareness of diabetes among school children.

"At AHS-School Health Services [SHS], we believe in educating the children, who are the future citizens of the world about diabetes, which is the key healthcare concern worldwide. This campaign will raise awareness in order to promote a healthy lifestyle and habits, thereby preventing the spread of this disease in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Another aspect that this campaign will address is the prevalence of diabetes among students," said Dr Sumaya Marzouqi, Manager of School Health Services.

Schedule

The schedule for the campaign will be the same at all the respective schools, which aims to increase the awareness of diabetic among students, their families and the community by educating them about the causes, prevention, treatment, and daily life activities of diabetic students.

The campaign will begin in the morning where the participants will be taken through a diabetic role play, diabetic song, and a contest about diabetes, which will be presented in a recreational-goals oriented manner. The campaign will comprise of walking exercises for the students at the school premises, and they will visit the awareness exhibition which will includes posters and models talking about the diabetic student's daily life and needs.

The special feature of the campaign is the presence of a diabetic educator who will offer information about the diabetes treatment, skills and the tools used for giving insulin, as well as the questions from the children and their families on relevant topics. Interested visitors who would like to measure their RBS (Random Blood Sugar), BP (Blood Pressure) and BMI (Body Mass Index) also have a separate enclosure in the exhibition.
