Dubai: The Gulf Medical University (GMU) in Ajman is offering training courses in first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to women and families at discounted rates. The courses are held in the university’s advanced simulation centre.

The Centre for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (Cash), established by the university, simulates a ‘hospital setting,’ and is spread over 20,000 square feet.

Professor Manda Venkatramana, director of the Centre and Dean College of Medicine, said: “The centre is tying up with corporates and companies to offer joint training courses to benefit professionals as well as lay people.”

The promoters of the centre, Thumbay Group will offer special rates for training as part of its corporate social responsibility activities.

“The centre has trained more than 1,000 health-care professionals and lay people in a short span of time,” Venkatramana said.

The centre is offering a Family and Friends First Aid CPR Course, which is accredited by the American Heart Association.

The centre also offers a video-based CPR course. The course teaches one how to manage illness and injuries in a child until professional help arrives. The programme also covers child safety and accident prevention measures.

“This course is for those involved in child care, who have a duty to respond to a first aid emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements,” Venkatramana said. “This audience includes childcare workers, teachers, foster-care workers, camp counsellors, youth organisations and coaches for children’s sports organisations. This course is also ideal for parents, grandparents, babysitters and guardians.”
