Abu Dhabi: Expatriate workers in all federal government departments in Abu Dhabi and their dependents will be covered by health insurance with immediate effect, it was announced yesterday.
The departments will be responsible for obtaining the coverage for its employees, spouses and three dependents under 18 years, according to the norms signed by Dr Mohammad Khalfan Bin Kharbash, Minister of State for Finance and Industry.
The employees will bear the cost of health coverage for any additional children or individuals on their sponsorship.
Obtaining or renewing the sponsorship of any expatriate will not be permitted without providing proof of a valid health insurance policy.
From next year, all expatriates working in companies with less than 1,000 employees and their dependents, individuals sponsored by Emiratis, and visitors with visas valid for more than two months, will be eligible for the mandatory health coverage.
Employers' failure to subscribe or renew the health insurance for workers and their families will result in a penalty of Dh300 per month, for every person not covered by insurance.
Employers are not only liable for the cost of the health insurance policy but also for all healthcare services that are provided to workers on their sponsorship, if they are not covered by a valid policy, according to officials of the Abu Dhabi Health Authority.
