Ras Al Khaimah: We all worry at one time or another about the odd traffic fine or two.
But one female driver in the UAE is staring down an almost unthinkable amount of traffic violations, which by last count have surpassed Dh1 million in fines that have yet to be heard by the courts.

According to court officials in Ras Al Khaimah, the 31-year-old driver, identified as R.N.A. has amassed a total of 1,380 traffic violations as registered by authorities across the country.

Authorities said the woman has spoken to them and confided that she is overtaken by an unknown medical condition once she climbs behind the steering wheel and that feels compelled to speed.

Zayed Mohammad, Head of the Ras Al Khaimah Public Persecution office, told an Arab newspaper yesterday that the female driver confessed to the traffic violations and that she presented traffic officials a medical report from a Dubai-based hospital saying that she suffers psychological imbalances.

While the report may have been submitted in order to ask the court for some leniency, Mohammad said everyone must obey the same traffic laws and there are no exceptions.

Registration not renewed

Mohammad said that the driver believes that she will enter the Guinness World Records for the highest rate of traffic violations. He also pointed out that the driver has not renewed her vehicle ownership licence in four years and that she committed traffic violations in each and every UAE emirate.

He also said that the traffic investigations regarding the driver have been concluded and that the case has been referred to the RAK traffic court.

On her part, the driver is apparently set to submit a request from the traffic court in Ras Al Khaimah to set up a committee to look into her psychological condition to consider reducing the traffic fines. The woman has hired an attorney to represent her in court.
