Abu Dhabi: President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan yesterday held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the latest regional and international developments with emphasis on the Middle East peace process and the situation in Iraq.

They discussed bilateral relations and ways to boost them in all fields.

Shaikh Khalifa expressed the UAE's firm desire to strengthen its trade, economic and investment relations with Japan for the benefit of the two friendly peoples.

Qualitative leap

Shaikh Khalifa stressed the importance of paying special attention by Abu Dhabi and Tokyo to the trade and investment relations to ensure tangible results in the growth of joint investment.

The President hoped that Abe's visit to the UAE would open up new avenues for enhancing bilateral relations and greater horizons in all sectors so as to make a qualitative leap in the joint economic partnership. Shaikh Khalifa highlighted the vital role Japan plays in maintaining stability and security in Iraq whether in the economic or security domains.

Abe said that visit aimed at acquainting himself with the amazing progress made by the UAE in all walks of life under the wise leadership of Shaikh Khalifa.

Abe said that Japan gives special attention to its relations with the UAE, which is seen as a model for economic growth and diversification of non-oil industries.

Cementing ties

He pointed out to common factors that Japan and the UAE share in the trade, economic and investment policies.

These factors, he noted, provided Japanese government and firms with strong incentives to invest in the UAE. Shaikh Khalifa hosted a banquet in honour of Abe and his accompanying delegation.

The talks and the banquet were attended by General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and other Shaikhs, ministers and senior officials.

Earlier, Abe was accorded a warm welcome by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai who expressed hope that the current visit would further cement relations between the two friendly countries.

Shaikh Mohammad and his Japanese counterpart exchanged views on ways to develop trade, economic and investment between the UAE and Japan.
