Dubai: A total of 1,598 prisoners in the UAE will be released on the occasion of Ramadan, news agency WAM reported on Monday.

In Abu Dhabi, President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered the release of 973 prisoners who have been convicted in various cases.

The President also pledged that the debts and financial obligations of the prisoners will be settled.

In Dubai, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, ordered the release of 625 prisoners.

The prisoners have served various periods of their jail terms.

Dubai Attorney-General Esam Eissa Al Humaidan said the order will be implemented immediately to ensure the swift release of the prisoners from the Punitive and Correctional Establishments at Dubai Police.
