Cape Town: Arab parliamentarians unanimously elected Dr Amal Al Qubaisi, member of the UAE Federal National Council (FNC), to the membership of the standing committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The decision was made at a meeting held on the sidelines of the 118th assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, which started on Sunday at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, South Africa.
At the meeting, heads of Arab Parliamentary delegations also discussed urgent items listed on the IPU assembly's agenda, including a request to give Palestinian National Council full membership of the IPU as well listing of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The UAE delegation taking part in the IPU Cape Town meeting is led by Ahmad Shabib Al Daheri, First Deputy of FNC, and comprises FNC members Sultan Al Suwaidi, Dr Amal Al Qubaisi, Rashid Mohammad Al Shareeqi, Yousuf Ali Bin Fadhel and Abdul Rahman Al Shamsi, FNC Assistant Secretary General.
Topics on the agenda of the IPU's assembly include the election of the president and vice-presidents of the 118th assembly, consideration of possible requests for the inclusion of an emergency item in the assembly agenda, general debate on the political, economic and social situation in the world.
It will also discuss the role of parliaments in striking a balance between national security, human security and individual freedoms and also averting the threat to democracy.
IPU, which was established in 1889 as an international organisation of parliaments of sovereign states, is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and cooperation among people and for the establishment of representative democracy.
