Sharjah: Breeding and keeping wild animals and reptiles at homes or in farms will no longer be allowed in Sharjah and violators will be slapped with a Dh100,000 fine in addition to confiscation of the species.

His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has issued a decision banning the breeding and possession of wild animals and reptiles at homes and farms.

Public and private parks, scientific and research centres and universities which obtained licences from the Environment and Natural Reserves Agency in Sharjah are excluded from this decision.

Dr Shaikh Sultan’s decision came on Sunday after residents called to complain on a live programme, Al Khat Al Mubasher, which airs on Sharjah Radio and Sharjah TV.

The decision has been taken to protect the community from the risks and damages associated with breeding wild animals and reptiles and also to preserve public interest in the emirate. The authorities concerned will also inspect markets which sell prohibited animals.

The decision comes after a number of incidents involving animals which troubled residents. The decision will be implemented after one month.
