Sharjah: Sharjah has introduced a law prohibiting members of a local or federal council from holding positions in another body at the same time to prevent conflict of interests.

The law issued by His Highness Dr. Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, applies to members of the Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC), Federal National Council (FNC) and the Sharjah Executive Council and Municipal Council.

Shaikh Sultan on Saturday issued law No 6 of 2010 amending law No 3 for 1999 on the establishment of the Consultative Council of the emirate of Sharjah.

"This move is aimed at preventing conflict of interests and enhancing the role of the council since members will not be allowed to combine the membership of the SCC with that of either the FNC, the emirate's executive council and its municipal council," a source from the consultative council told Gulf News.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a member said "the new amendment would have a positive impact on the parliamentary work in the emirate."

The Consultative Council's annual convening session will be not less than eight months, starting October each year. The council will hold an ordinary session every two weeks, and may be called for an extraordinary session whenever required.
