Abu Dhabi: The UAE Cabinet on Sunday approved a federal law on food safety and also set up a UAE Board of Medical Specialities.

The Cabinet meeting was chaired by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

During the discussion of the new food security draft law, Shaikh Mohammad said: “Our objective and vision in the UAE, which we announced previously, is the development of a healthy society in a safe environment.”

The safety of the community he added, also comes from the quality of its food; the government in cooperation with the local authorities will work to tighten control procedures and raise the level of food safety through this comprehensive federal project.

Shaikh Mohammad also approved the setting up of the UAE medical board. He stressed that the government takes all proposals and recommendations from the public seriously and that the recommendations adopted during the Emirati brainstorming sessions are part of the Cabinet’s agenda.

He added that government departments started implementing these suggestions directly after the cabinet retreat.

Shaikh Mohammad said the proposal to develop a UAE Medical Board Specialities came from the public’s suggestions and was approved by the council to raise the skills of medical staff through training in collaboration with national and global educational institutions.

This came during Shaikh Mohammad’s chairing of the cabinet meeting that was held at the Presidential Palace in the presence of Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs.

The Cabinet also approved the re-formation of the UAE University and Zayed University’s Board of Directors.

Shaikh Mohammad said that the next priority for the board of both universities will be to raise their level globally and strengthen their academic role and develop future research and studies that benefit the community.

International agreements

The Emirates University Board of Directors is chaired by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the membership of Mohammad Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and other senior officials. The cabinet also approved the restructuring of the Zayed University Board to be chaired by Shaikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Development and International Cooperation, and the membership of other senior officials.

The Cabinet also approved the regulation and specifications of the UAE’s flag, used within and outside the country.

It endorsed the federal government’s purchasing guide prepared by the Ministry of Finance in cooperation with other departments.

It also adopted the final accounts of the Federal Council of Demographics for the fiscal year ending 2012. The final account of the Zakat Fund for the financial year ending 2012 was also endorsed.

In the context of international agreements, the Cabinet endorsed the TIFA trade investment framework agreement signed between GCC countries and the US.

The agreement aims to promote cooperation and joint action to strengthen and enhance economic relations between the two sides, especially in the field of trade and industry investment.

The cabinet also approved the establishment of the regional branch of the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation in Dubai, one of the most important institutions of the Islamic Development Bank.
